It’s Pumpkin Pie Season!

Yesterday was the first official day of fall. There are many great recipes that include different foods that grow during the fall months, but my personal favorite is the traditional pumpkin pie. I can never pass up a slice of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving dinner. So what is your favorite fall dessert? Do you have one that is a must try? Let us know!

I recently read an article in Forbes that made so much sense that I have to share it.  I believe that people have jobs for various reasons such as income, personal fulfillment, boredom, etc..  The list goes on and on.  Whatever you do in the form of work doesn’t have to be drudgery, it can indeed be fun even in the worst situations.

Truly you can not change other people but you can influence them with a happy attitude.  Laughter is contagious.

History of Independence Day

With Independence Day (aka Fourth of July) coming up in a few days for us here in the United States, I was curious about the history behind the holiday. I found an interesting article online about Independence Day. Click here to read the article.

Many people around the country enjoy going to a fireworks show on the Fourth of July. If you’re like me, you’ve probably wondered how the tradition of shooting fireworks on the Fourth of July got started. Well, I found an article about that, too. You can find the article here.

I enjoy watching fireworks displays on the Fourth of July either in person or watching fireworks on TV. What is your favorite way to celebrate the Fourth of July? Comment on this post and let us know.

We’ve all bought bed sheets at least once, right? Well, have you ever thought about the production process for those sheets? I just got introduced to the manufacturing world last week when I started working for JS Royal Home, the company that produces the Affluence Home Fashions products. It takes a lot of people, but the result is a collection of great bed sheets.

Affluence Retail Store

Now that we are very much into warmer weather it may be time to think about where the deals are.  Normally in the winter you do not need a lawnmower and vice versa in the summer you do not need flannel sheets.  The time to buy these items is when the demand is low and the price is down.  Don’t get caught up in the season of necessity.

We have beautiful, soft, and durable flannel sheets on sale at Affluence Home Fashions for a fraction of the price you pay at larger retailers.  Our colors are neutral and will fit with most decors.  Don’t spend another winter sleeping on flannel sheets that you paid too much for.  Shop with us today!

I found this post that really gives you some ideas on how to combat the mosquitoes in your own yard.  I followed the instructions from this post and I have created a really dramatic setting on my porch and deck.

Over the years I have purchased many products, most of them really smelly, to achieve a mosquito free environment.  If you love the outdoors like I do and live in the South you understand this challenge.  I refuse to give up great summer evenings and dinners.

These are the 11 plants and I bought each one of them and have placed them in free draining pots.  My goal is to achieve zero standing water.  A mosquito can breed in a thimble of water.  I will keep you posted on my results as the summer progresses.  The summer here in North Carolina is off to an early start, so it should be a good year for testing the effectiveness of these plants.mosquito-plants-570x800

The study of the history of clothing and textiles traces the availability and use of textiles and other materials and the development of technology for the making of clothing over human history. The wearing of clothing is exclusively a human characteristic and is a feature of most human societies. It is not known when humans began wearing clothes but anthropologists believe that animal skins and vegetation were adapted into coverings as protection from cold, heat and rain, especially as humans migrated to new climates; and an alternative hypothesis is that covering may have been first used for other purposes, such as magic, decoration, cult, or prestige, and later found to be practical as well. Clothing and textiles have been important in human history and reflects the materials available to a civilization as well as the technologies that had been mastered. The social significance of the finished product reflects their culture.

Textiles can be felt or spun fibers made into yarn and subsequently netted, looped, knit or woven to make fabrics, which appeared in the Middle East during the late stone age.[1] From the ancient times to the present day, methods of textile production have continually evolved, and the choices of textiles available have influenced how people carried their possessions, clothed themselves, and decorated their surroundings.[2]

Sources available for the study of clothing and textiles include material remains discovered via archaeology; representation of textiles and their manufacture in art; and documents concerning the manufacture, acquisition, use, and trade of fabrics, tools, and finished garments. Scholarship of textile history, especially its earlier stages, is part of material culture studies
